Old Fashioned Hard Candy Recipe

This old fashioned hard candy recipe is probably the same one your grandma used to use. Follow the steps closely and you will have a sweet, delectable candy in no time.
Heat the mixture
In a heavy saucepan, combine 2 cups of white sugar, 1 cup of water, and 3/4 cup of light corn syrup. Cook this mixture while stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Then, turn the heat down to low and continue to boil the mixture without stirring. Monitor the temperature closely and allow it to reach the hard crack stage, or 300 degrees Fahrenheit. If crystals form on the side of the pan, gently wipe them away.
Flavoring
When the mixture reaches 300 degrees, remove the pan from the heat and stir in 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract. You can also replace this with any other pure extract for different flavors. Add 2 drops of food coloring as well and stir just until combined. Move quickly or the candy will begin to set.
Pouring the candy
When the mixture is combined, pour it into 2 nine inch pans that have been well-greased with butter. As soon as the candy is cool enough to touch, use scissors to cut it into strips and then pieces. After they are completely cool, toss the candy pieces in a small amount of powdered sugar to keep them from sticking together.
That's all there is to it! Enjoy your old fashioned candy and share some with a friend. Take a trip down memory lane with your taste buds.
