Candy by Decades

The changes in candy by decades is quite an interesting trend. It can be great fun to explore the many varieties of candy that have existed over the years and see which ones are still around today and which you have never even heard of.

The 1940's

In the 1940's, the Bit O' Honey candy was all the rage. This candy is still around today. Also common were Teaberry Gum, Sugar Daddy Pops, Charms Squares, and Long Boys. All of these can still be seen in specialty candy stores today. Slick Nuggets and BB Bats were common, but are harder to find now.

The 1950's.

This decade saw the invention of the Boston Baked Bean, Candy Cigarettes, Canada Mints, and Red Hots. Also common were wax lips and root beer barrels.

The 1960's

During the 1960's, many new candies were invented. Abba Zaba Minis, Cinnamon Toothpicks, and Now & Laters were popular with kids. Red Hots and Mike & Ike were also relatively new and became popular. Coconut Bars and Fizzies were also hits.

The 1970's until present

Most candies that were invented in the 1970's are still around today. This includes Freshen Up Gum, Jolly Rancher Sticks, and Sweetarts. In the 1980's, Nerds and Bazooka Gum were invented. Airheads became one of the most popular children's candies in the 1990's along with Blow Pops, Caramel Apple Pops, Fun Dip, Cry Baby Gum, and Sour Patch Kids.

It has always been fun and enjoyable to enjoy a piece of candy. Candy has changed through the decades, but still remains a favorite of kids everywhere.
